Free Speech - It’s the Law
Face the Culture welcomes Pastor David Whitney from https://theamericanview.com/ to discuss how the Constitution is the embodiment of God’s law. Some people over the years have tried to paint these laws as repressive and harmful. We have learned, unfortunately the hard way, that it is just the opposite. God’s laws when ignored bring pain, suffering and in some cases death. A young student in a Michigan high school had to go to court to fight for First Amendment rights as described in the Bill of Rights. David Stout was suspended from the school for expressing his Christian beliefs in a private conversation. Before being suspended, David says that a teacher quizzed him as to why he did not “self-report” his sharing his personal religious beliefs to school officials. Why would he do that you might wonder? He did not break any laws! Ah! But the offense in the mind of modern-day Americans is worse. The teacher told him if this conversation was overheard, others could be offended or feel safe and afraid! David was told that talking about religion was not allowed on campus for fear of hurting someone’s feelings. He was told to immediately stop all such conversations. Furthermore, school administrators warned him his speech on and off campus and on social media could affect his future employment.
At no point do you hear those in authority refer to the Constitution for reference on how to handle this situation. If they had read the first amendment to the Bill of Rights, they would have known right away they didn’t have a case. Pastor Whitney stated that in another time, this case would have been dismissed outright by the Supreme Court. Today, we are not so sure that would be the outcome. Ignorance of the basis of what our Constitution is founded on, the Bible, has left us in the hands of too few in centralized power at the top… out of local control. Historically speaking, that has never ended well for the everyday citizen. Let’s go back to the mindset of our Founders who purposely set out to found a country that was truly built on the idea expressed in the beginning of the Declaration of Independence that
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
This was a sincerely held belief! Rights did not come from the state but from God Himself, Creator of all humanity! Therefore the power to speak that which is void of

· Lies
· Obscenity
Is not to be denied or restricted. Peter reminds us in Acts 5:29 that when speech allowed by God’s law is trying to be humanly repressed, we are to obey God rather than people. Therefore we see that the right to say no putting a substance in your body, or refusing to buy a product the government coerces you into buying and other such examples where you are being taught to submit to the government first, violates a citizens Constitutional rights. Stand up for what is lawfully your rights as given in the Constitution.
